Our training guide is for physicians, dentists, nurses, social service and support staff. It provides an introduction to vital issues that affect the quality of care for patients with disabilities. Through compelling scenes with Diana and Kathy, their doctors, and other healthcare professionals Body & Soul: Diana & Kathy introduces and clarifies key concepts in treating adults with physical and intellectual disabilities. In a dynamic, story based film, the nuance of real life and the emotional content reach the viewer, as well as the training information. The following themes are clearly evident:

  1. Explores the views and experiences of people with disabilities and their providers as they establish rapport and effective communication.
  2. Addresses cultural competence, access, and communication issues which often arise in the clinic, hospital, or emergency room setting.
  3. Identifies common myths and stereotypes which interfere with accurate assessment of patients.
  4. Shows barriers which result in disparities in health care delivery, including physical/architectural, communication, attitudinal and social/economic policy.
  5. Identifies the most common access and accommodation needs of adults with physical, sensory and communication disabilities, as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act, and explains feasible, cost-effective solutions.
  6. Clarifies essential principles of quality care in treating people with disabilities.
  7. Reinforces key learning points in bulleted graphics (available in printed handouts in the curriculum).

Body & Soul: Diana & Kathy Training Guide, offers a case-based learning exercise and extensive in-depth reference materials. It provides essential knowledge for appropriate provision of care and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The curriculum emphasizes access and communication as the fundamental components in addressing health care disparities for people with disabilities. It is certified for Continuing Education credit.
